VISUAL CREATORS

Sony unveils its own mixed-reality headset at CES2023, targeting spatial creators with a system that lets users both view and make 3D models.

The Sony XR HMD (head-mounted display) has a 4K OLED display and comes with two controllers—a ring and a pointing tool. The headset supports split rendering, which offloads processing to a separate device.

"We're taking a different approach", Sony said. The company is piloting the system with Siemens for immersive manufacturing design using the new NX Immersive Designer software.

Apple’s Vision Pro is expected to ship later this year. Watch this space!

Will Sony's XR HMD flip creators to mixed reality?

 PRODUCTION MASTERY

Magid research shows that while Netflix's recent viewership data dump was a step toward transparency, it doesn't tell the whole story.

The firm used its EmotionalDNA tool to analyze four shows from the list, finding that each had distinct value beyond pure watch time.

Love is Blind, for example, had the highest engagement among high-income viewers, while Wednesday scored best in viewer intentionality.

Magid EVP Tony Cardinale argued that while “what” data like total watch hours is interesting, “why” data – like why viewers stick around – is more telling.

 CREATOR ECONOMY

Ivy Liu / Digiday

YouTube's struggle to position itself as a premium ad platform continues to baffle agency executives.

Despite boasting the highest TV watch time share among U.S. streamers, its vast library of user-generated content (UGC) has made it hard to compete with more curated platforms like Hulu and Netflix.

Still, execs recognize there's quality programming on YouTube – they just want the site to make it easier to advertise against.

But as YouTube's CBO said, the “debate about quality of content” is a “false paradigm.”
