Apple's new iPhone can now shoot 3D video that you can watch using a virtual reality (VR) headset. It's like having a VR movie of your own life that you can walk around in, not just watch on a screen.

Right now, you can only try it if you're part of a special testing group.

Why We Care: This could be the start of everyday people making and sharing 3D video, and that could change how we all show and watch each other's videos.

The Big Problem: It's not clear yet if many people will want to try this or what they'll want to make 3D videos of.

What's Next: Experts say this could be a step toward a future with “virtual reality memories”,where you want to watch a 3D video of a family trip or a wedding instead of looking at old photos.

PRODUCTION MASTERY

YouTube and Spotify are among the major apps opting not to launch dedicated versions for Apple’s upcoming mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro.

About 20 apps will be available including TikTok, Disney+, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, and more.

Spotify, Netflix, Youtube and Meta-owned services Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are reportedly passing on launching dedicated apps for now, but that could change in the future. Developers are reportedly hesitant to support the device as Apple’s recent App Store rules have pissed off many.

While Apple says it will automatically include compatible iPad apps in its Vision Pro store, at least 20 media companies have opted out, reportedly citing issues with Apple’s rules for in-app purchases.

@edmundlee tweeted “I can’t find a company exec., especially at a music or TV service saying they are making an Apple headset app”.

Notably, Vision Pro will launch without the support of top media streaming services and apps like Spotify, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Snap, and others.

Will Apple's Vision Pro be a hit without YouTube, Spotify and others?

CREATOR ECONOMY

TikTok’s latest craze is “sludge” — a video format where multiple clips play on the same screen.

It started last year, and now it’s all over the app. For the younger crowd, this chaotic, overstimulating style is therapeutic.

Research last year from Ofcom showed that children often watch two clips at once to stay entertained. TikTok’s sludge takes that to another level and packs in even more content, and oddly, the kids love it.

Andreas Schellewald, a social media researcher at Goldsmiths University of London, said sludge is "something playful, that can take your mind off things and doesn’t require you to dive deep".

For younger viewers, watching sludge is often "like my mind feels whole”, as one teen on TikTok put it.
