VISUAL CREATORS

Apple and UC Berkeley researchers open-sourced an AI model, MGIE, that can edit images based on text instructions.

Sure, you can generate images using AI models like DALL·E, but what about editing photos you already have using AI?

What’s unique here is that the model can work with both freeform text editing instructions as well as for specific parts of the images.

The real utility, however, will likely come down to the quality and complexity of instructions the model can handle—a separate instruction might be needed to “make the sky more dramatic” versus simply “edit sky.”

The paper states that the system was trained on 7,000 images and descriptions, it suggests text-editing capabilities “can be improved with an even larger dataset”.

In the meantime, output from the online editor remains largely not perfect but still an interesting and maybe even useful mash-up of text-to-image generation.

PRODUCTION MASTERY

Basically, they couldn't get the artsy folk and AI companies to agree on terms.

This means no protection for artists as AI juggernauts like DeepMind and Microsoft want to train their models on copyrighted stuff without compensating creators.

Lawsuits from artists and media companies stateside have already started dropping, setting the stage for a copyright clash of the titans.
It's a classic case of big tech taking a big bite out of the creative pie, leaving artists high and dry.

Looks like the UK's gonna need more than a white paper to untangle this copyright conundrum.

How do you feel about UK's stalled AI copyright code?

CREATOR ECONOMY

Europe is taking a harsh stance against deepfakes by criminalizing the non-consensual creation and distribution of sexually explicit deepfakes.

The move is part of a broader effort to combat cyberviolence and protect the privacy and dignity of individuals online.

The legislation is the first of its kind and follows in the footsteps of a similar bill introduced in the US in 2020.

While some argue that the laws don't go far enough or risk stifling free expression, the action represents a critical step in addressing the emerging threat of AI-generated media manipulation.

Is Europe's approach to deepfakes:
