Netflix
Netflix has delivered a jaw-dropping holiday gift to the entertainment world: an unprecedented data dump.
The king of streaming is now revealing what shows and movies its 200 million subscribers are watching, making Hollywood's famously hidden metrics public.
The move is being lauded as a win for creators and a glimpse into what the world really watches—spoiler: it's not always what you'd expect. Foreign language films, for example, account for nearly one-third of all viewing.
Whether this data drop is a lasting transparency play or just a holiday PR stunt is anyone's guess, but for now, the curtain's been lifted, and the view is fascinating.

📺 YouTube Eyes TV Domination
YouTube is making strides to become the go-to platform for all video content, aiming to replicate its online video dominance on the big screen.
With over 71% of connected TV households tuning into YouTube in May, the platform was only narrowly edged out by Netflix's 74% reach on the device, per Comscore. YouTube's 2023 push included the launch of Primetime Channels, similar to Amazon Channels, selling standalone subscriptions to services like Paramount+, Starz and AMC+.
It's been a hit with advertisers too, as over 150 brands have tested out the platform's Brand Extensions feature. Now YouTube is laser-focused on replicating its success with ad-supported channels by extending its offering to feature longer, more premium content at scale through its Shorts monetization efforts.
Comscore's Tribal Knowledge column last week argued YouTube is "flexing its arm" and primed to become an even bigger presence due to its vast library, strong brand and ease in buying via connected TV/app stores.
“Our focus has been on how do we be that next great entertainment franchise?" YouTube's head of originals Susanne Daniels said last month. “We’re just about as focused as can be in making our content easily findable, and consumable, and enjoyable by viewers”.

OpenAI and Axel Springer cut a deal to feed ChatGPT with content from the news giant’s publications like Business Insider and Politico.
Yep, the bot will now pull info from those articles and even provide links to the full stories. Axel Springer sees this as a money-making move, saying the tie-up with OpenAI opens new financial doors.
For now, ChatGPT will snack on Business Insider’s premium content but steer clear of Politico Pro’s paywalled stories.
Axel Springer isn’t the first to cozy up to OpenAI—AP signed a similar agreement in July.
