Italy-based app developer Bending Spoons has reportedly laid off the entire staff of mobile video and photo capture app Filmic.

The move comes just a year after Bending Spoons acquired the app, which was lauded as the top in its category.

Filmic’s founder and CEO, Neill Barham, left the company in November, after which Filmic’s name was removed from Bending Spoons's website. Barham’s departure and the removal of Filmic’s name were both recent red flags, as was the lack of support for Apple’s latest hardware updates.

Apple even used a competitor’s app, BlackMagic, to shoot footage at its own event in October.

Notably, Bending Spoons also owns video editing app Splice and photo AI app Remini.

Filmic's parent company ditches it for a profit. Your reaction?

 PRODUCTION MASTERY

In a sci-fi fan coup, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine gets an unofficial HD remaster thanks to AI upscaling.

The visuals are now as crystalline as Spock's logic, a far cry from the original 90s broadcast. The upscaling maestros painstakingly fed every frame through AI Gigapixel's neural network to enhance the resolution, and the results are mind-blowing.

You can now see every ridge on the Klingon foreheads in glorious 1080p. Fans and creators are over the moon, but not all starships are set to warp speed.

Paramount plans a less ambitious HD release, but will it match the bar set by the fandom's love letter to Star Trek? Watch this space.

👀 YouTube's Live Like & View

Why it matters: It’s not clear why Google would want to change this aspect of YouTube. The view and like counts have historically been a badge of honor for creators, and artificially inflating them could make those metrics less meaningful.

A Google spokesperson told Protocol the company is (surprise) always testing new experiences but had nothing to announce.

The backstory: A handful of Reddit users noticed the change and discussed ways to disable it using browser extensions. It’s not clear how many users have been included in the test.
