TikTok's eyeing the photo market. But why? Let us develop that story for you.

In today's rundown

VISUAL CREATORS
For your artistic side.

That’s quite the hot take, considering how ubiquitous cameras are in today’s selfie-obsessed society.

But is he onto something? Östlund’s new documentary, “Fantastic Machine”, examines our modern camera craze and the impact of our image-obsessed culture. It’s already won critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival.

The film features filmmakers Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck. Axel Danielson cautions that the power of the visual bypasses "layers of intellect" inherent in text-based communication. With more populism fueled by image-based narratives, Maximilien Van Aertryck wants algorithmic change to make us citizens, not just consumers.

Van Aertryck goes as far as to say algorithms are more dangerous than environmental problems. Yikes.

Where does cinema go from here? Östlund remains hopeful that films can combat the superficiality of social media snaps. Maybe it’s time we all start filming more and posing less?

The commercial aspects of creativity.

Netflix

Netflix’s recent true crime docuseries, What Jennifer Did, is stirring up more drama than it covers. Fans spotted some oddities in the photos showcased in the show, suggesting AI manipulation.

The images in question feature Jennifer Pan and her high school friend with some glaring hand and tooth irregularities.

It's not the first time AI has been under the true crime lens; however, this incident is drawing more heat due to the lack of clear labeling if they were AI-generated.

Many seem to think that true crime docuseries should be able to use AI alongside other tools like reenactments, illustrations and so on, but it needs to be clearly labeled. Whether or not these alterations were made to deliberately deceive viewers is unclear so far.

Either way, it's a slippery slope when tech tricks mingle with real-life tragedies. The saga continues as viewers demand transparency and authenticity.

TikTok is launching a new app for photos called TikTok Notes. The move comes as video content dominates and platforms like Instagram open up competition for photo creators.

But here's the twist: photos from the main app will automatically show up on Notes unless users opt-out. Sounds like a familiar play, right? Instagram does something similar with Threads, a companion app for close friends.

TikTok has been pushing photos for months, highlighting their engagement potential. Since then, photo posts have been getting more likes and comments than videos.

And while they’re at it, TikTok’s also launching TikTok Lite, a slimmed-down app with rewards for users in the EU aged 18+. While launching standalone apps may seem cumbersome, other platforms like Meta, Pinterest, and YouTube have done the same to drive growth.
