The idea that newspapers—especially local ones—might vanish, and journalism could go with it, has been put forward by many, including Rogers Fidler, the former news VP who now consults and speaks on the industry.

He’s been warning about “the great proletarianization of professional journalism” for years, but there haven’t been any drastic moves like nationalizing The New York Times, banning The Flyover Times or trying to salvage democracy through print journalism welfare checks.

The slow cuts just keep happening, with Facebook’s newfound commitment to local journalism mainly consisting of a $100 million fund it plans to draw down a decade, launched a new referral program and said it will spend $5 million on marketing for the relocation services marketplace Prima on fake news audits.

Domestic news dominance and the slow erosion of the local press via doubted digital advertising revenue mean the long decline in local journalism is likely to continue. This is the way the world ends — not with a bang but a digital ad buy on a listicle.

Apple’s Vision Pro demands a camera that’s more IMAX than Instagram, and Canon’s saying they’re not ready to meet those specs (yet).

For the AVP, you’ll need at least a 100-megapixel camera—about 10 times what you’d get on your top-of-the-line iPhone or Samsung—and that’s just for starters.

Canon’s current line caps out around 50 megapixels, which sounds impressive, until you hear that it won’t get close to matching the 76-mm X 76-mm sensor on Big Sky Camera, a beast crafted just for the Las Vegas Sphere. And size isn’t the only thing—the frame rate’s gotta be there too, at 60 frames per second.

At this point, only the high-def behemoth from Big Sky can meet those demanding specs, leaping past 8K and 12K and landing at 18K resolution.

For now, Canon’s looking toward outfits like Big Sky and Apple’s own expansive patents to deliver on the AVP’s spatial vision.

Will Canon catch up to AVP specs?

  3. Meta cuts news from its feeds by 97%, while X (Twitter) doubles down on politics, becoming a hub for open debate and sometimes-dangerous misinformation.
