Photographer Allen Kee is suing the Detroit Lions over their statue of football star Barry Sanders, claiming it's based on his photo without permission.
Kee’s image of Sanders, taken while Kee was freelancing, is considered an iconic shot.
He initially licensed it through NFL Photos, an agency the league once operated, but says he retained copyright and didn't grant the Lions or related parties permission to use it for the statue.
Kee is seeking an injunction and unspecified damages from the team, as well as from partners like Getty Images and McFarlane Toys.

Yesterday, Apple gave select media a sneak peek of its new mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro.
With a dense 4K display and the ability to seamlessly switch between augmented and virtual reality, the device aims to offer a more versatile spatial computing experience than competitors like the Meta Quest 2 and HTC Vive.
But with a starting price of $3.5k, it’s unclear if the Vision Pro will be anything more than a niche product for developers, professionals, and the most dedicated Apple fans.
That said, it does give us a glimpse of a future where our physical and digital worlds blend more seamlessly—one face scan at a time.
