California-based photographer Scott Hargis just snagged a $6.3 million jackpot, and it's not from snapping celebs.

He sued Pacifica Senior Living for using 43 of his shots without permission, and the jury went all-in, awarding him one of the fattest checks in copyright history.

Here's the kicker: Hargis registered his works with the United States Copyright Office, turning the tables in his favor. If he hadn't, he'd be scrambling for loose change instead of hitting the jackpot.

Looks like photographers are playing a different kind of lottery these days, and registration is the golden ticket.

Is copyright registration the photographer's golden ticket?

AI image generator Civitai has been cut off by its computing provider OctoML after allegations of users creating and distributing nonconsensual pornography.

404 Media published an article last week citing internal communications at OctoML that expressed concern over a text-to-image model from Civitai’s platform that could generate “unethical/shocking content”.

OctoML initially blocked the generation of all not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content on Civitai before completely severing ties in response to the allegations.

Civitai, which raised $5m from Andreessen Horowitz, had previously offered “bounties” for users to create realistic images of people.

Should OctoML have cut ties with Civitai?
